Biography

Sarah McKeown has been a dedicated water marbling artist since 2018. Over the years, she has explored a wide range of surfaces, but her favourite mediums are silk scarves and fine art papers, where the fluid nature of marbling truly comes to life. She is especially drawn to upcycling vintage paper, a practice that adds depth, character, and history to each piece while giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded. This sustainable approach not only enriches the visual impact of her work but also reflects her commitment to thoughtful, intentional creation.

In addition to water marbling, Sarah’s creative interests span many disciplines, including photography, fibre arts, jewellery making, and furniture restoration. While she enjoys exploring new techniques and materials, water marbling has become her greatest artistic passion—an ever-evolving practice that continues to challenge and inspire her with its balance of spontaneity, control, and endless possibility.

Artist Statement

Water marbling is the art of painting on water. This centuries-old technique transforms simple drops of paint into flowing, intricate designs that can never be exactly repeated. I use water marbling to create one-of-a-kind fabrics and paper pieces, turning them into home décor, fine art, and wearable works of art. Each piece is carefully transferred by hand from the water’s surface, capturing a single moment in time. No two designs are ever the same, making every water-marbled creation truly unique.
